Literacy and numeracy co-requisites, plus English, Mathematics & Statistics, Science, Chemistry & Biology, Physics, Earth & Space Science, Agricultural & Horticultural Science and Commerce. To be awarded NCEA at any level, you need 10 literacy credits (reading + writing) and 10 numeracy credits. Most students get them through the three Common Assessment Activities below, sat online in May or September. They're Achieved/Not Achieved only, and you can usually re-sit if needed.
Level 1 is still assessed in 2026 and 2027. The government has confirmed it will be removed from 2028, replaced by a Foundational Award for literacy and numeracy.
